International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated internationally on March 8, 2019. It is a day to recognize women’s achievements and acknowledge the challenges that continue to exist in pursuit of gender equality.
Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association acknowledges these challenges and supports the work of the Framework for Recreation in Canada which as a part of its Goal 2, aims to “Increase inclusion and access to recreation for populations that face constraints to participation.”
Priorities within Goal 2 – Inclusion and Access include:
- Enable and encourage women and girls of all backgrounds and circumstances to achieve their potential and participate fully in all types of recreation. Address the historical, cultural and social barriers to participation experienced by girls and women, and apply a gender equity lens when developing and monitoring policies, programs and practices.
- Enact policies of nondiscrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression. Provide a welcoming and safe environment for people with all sexual orientations and sexual identities.
Today and every day, we salute the great work of female recreation professionals, participants, pioneers and every role in between. Because we all have a role and a responsibility in improving the lives of women, and creating equal opportunities to live, work and play.
