Darby is a student currently enrolled in Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Therapeutic Recreation Diploma program. She has grown up in Moose Jaw all her life, where she has participated in many recreational activities such as swimming, dance, softball, basketball, and many other sports. She is currently working at Providence Place in Moose Jaw and was offered this position while on her four-week practicum there. Working at Providence Place has allowed her to work full time during the summer and casual while in school. Providence Place is a long-term care facility which has given her the opportunity to work with individuals ages 30 and above, improve the residents' quality of life, as well as provide her with a strong sense of purpose.
We asked Darby a few questions about what recreation means to her, and why she loves working in the field. Here's what she had to say:
What does Recreation mean to you?
Recreation means a positive outlet for stress. It is something all ages and abilities can do and can give a sense of well-being. Getting your body moving and socializing is very important in your overall health.
What do you love about recreation?
I love everything about recreation! Recreation provides stress relief, socialization, improves physical and emotional health, and can help you sleep.
Why are you studying recreation?
I grew up in a home where recreational activities played a huge role in all my family members lives. I wanted a career where I can better people's lives and make them happy. When I started doing more research into Therapeutic Recreation I realized it was a perfect fit for me because of my beliefs and values.
What area of recreation would you like to work in once you've finished your diploma program?
When I first started researching into Therapeutic Recreation I really wanted to get into Physical Rehabilitation. Now that I have worked in a long-term care facility it has given me a new perspective about where I might want to work in the future. I am planning on doing my next two practicums in a physical rehab setting and one with children. I am looking forward to learning about the different areas of recreation, to see where my passion will be.
Why is recreation so vital to communities in Saskatchewan?
Recreation brings communities together by providing activities that all ages and abilities can participate in to improve people's minds and bodies.
