Heidi Carl is one of the SPRA Board of Directors’ hard working Directors at Large. She is the Director of Operations at Boys & Girls Clubs of Saskatoon, and has been with the organization for over 20 years. Heidi is also a long standing HIGH FIVE® Master Trainer who contributes to the enhancement and maintenance of quality recreation experiences for children across Saskatchewan. She is also a passionate softball coach.
When not working tirelessly for her organization and volunteering on the SPRA Board and in her community, Heidi loves spending time with family, including her two daughters.
We asked Heidi a few questions about her experiences on our Board and what recreation means to her.
What do you find most rewarding about working in the parks and recreation sector?
I am passionate about ensuring access to opportunities that strengthen children, youth, families and communities.
Why did you decide to become a SPRA Board member?
I have been working in the non-profit and recreation sectors for a long time and it felt like it was my turn to help advance recreation in Saskatchewan. I feel like I have gained knowledge and experience that may be useful to others and in turn, I love to learn. As an organization, Boys & Girls Clubs already help other non-profit organizations and municipalities, so this was an opportunity to continue to help strengthen our communities in Saskatchewan and to advocate for the advancement of recreation in the province.
What do you like to do for fun?
Fun, for me, is being with my family! We get together a few times a year, whether it is camping or at someone’s house for a long weekend. There are always lots of laughs, sharing memories and making new ones!
What does recreation mean to you?
Recreation to me means doing something you love or are passionate about in your free time, something that benefits you and for me, that is coaching softball.
What advice would you give to people considering becoming an SPRA Board member?
As a new Board member, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I learned was that I should have put my hat in the ring long ago. SPRA Board members are very welcoming and take their responsibilities very seriously. It is great to work with a group that is so dedicated to ensuring decisions are made with the utmost consideration. If you like engaging discussions and want to make a contribution to the recreation sector, I would highly encourage you to become a Board member.
