RECognizing Our Board: Chrisandra Dezotell, Director at Large

Here's a fun fact about Chrisandra Dezotell - she worked with SPRA as a Summer Student in 2010 and 2011, while completing her post-secondary education in recreation, at both Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina. Fast forward to 2019, and she is now involved with our organization in a different capacity - as Director at Large.

Chrisandra has over 10 years of experience in municipal recreation, in both rural and urban centres.  From program planning, community development, facility management and event planning - her skill set, and perspective, are a great complement to our Board of Directors.

What do you find most rewarding about working in the sector?

 

We play a direct role in ensuring our communities are healthy, safe and enjoyable places to live, work and play - and I love that I am a part of that.

How has volunteering as a Board member enhanced your career in the parks/recreation field?

Volunteering with the Board has allowed me to gain experience in governance and strategic planning and has given me the chance to see how the organization runs from the top down.

 

Being relatively new to the industry, seeing an organization from the Board and CEO perspective has been extremely valuable. Serving on the Board, I've also had the opportunity to network with many individuals and I've learnt so much from my fellow Board members, the SPRA staff and the members that I have met along the way.

Why did you decide to become a SPRA Board member?

I decided to run for the SPRA Board because I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the industry and help shape the future of recreation for our province. This experience has helped me grow as a recreation professional.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love yoga and I love to travel! I also enjoy reading, curling, walking and spending time with the people I love!

What advice would you give to people considering becoming a SPRA Board member?

Do it! You won't regret it. If you are worried about having the time to commit, talk to one of the current Board members to get a better understanding of what is involved - and talk to your employer. Recreation employers are often supportive of any endeavors that will help their employees grow and will provide opportunities that they may otherwise not have.
