Take the Lead!
Take the Lead!® is is a free program fostering leadership skills and promoting active play.
Youth Leader training is designed for youth ages 11 to 14. The training empowers youth to deliver active, fun and safe play opportunities for their peers and younger children.
Leadership Coach training is available for adults (coaches, teachers, program leaders) who want to support Take the Lead! programs. Through training, Leadership Coaches gain the skills to support Youth Leaders and to facilitate future Youth Leader training.

- Increases physical activity and promotes physical literacy
- Encourages outdoor play
- Fosters safe and inclusive play environments
- Empowers youth to be leaders for their schools and communities
Since 2009, Take the Lead! has been successfully implemented by schools, communities and organizations across Saskatchewan.
How to Participate
There are two, free in-person training workshops available for groups to select from:
Youth Leader Training (7.5 hours, in-person)
- Minimum 10 participants, maximum 25
- Facilitator, manuals and a TTL! Equipment Kit included
Leadership Coach Training (7.5 hours, in-person)
- Minimum 5 participants, maximum 25
- Facilitator, manuals and lunch included

Leadership Coach training is 7 1/2 hours long and covers the same 7 modules, but from a higher-level and from the perspective of learning how to support Youth Leaders in building their leadership skills.

PHE Canada champions healthy, active kids by promoting and advancing quality health and physical education opportunities and healthy learning environments.
In 2016, we engaged PHE Canada to review the Take the Lead! manuals to ensure they’re high quality, current and meet the needs of youth in Saskatchewan. PHE Canada officially endorsed the updated Take the Lead! content and materials in 2018, saying, “the resource supports the aim and philosophy of [the] Health Education and Physical Education curriculum, is written clearly and would be applicable in the majority of recreational spaces.”
